Fort Point Channel becomes an artists area.
1976
(ca.) One of the first group of artists to move to the area rent the fifth floor of 34 Farnsworth Street. They had been forced out of their previous home at the Plant Shoe Factory in Jamaica Plain, which was destroyed by a recent fire. More artists, attracted by large spaces and low rents in the former warehouse buildings, soon follow. The first Fort Point Open Studios event is held in 1979.
